The ‘Mikes’ movie theater has been torn down in Texas
A new movie theater on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin has been demolished after students accused the owner of running a “socially irresponsible” and “dangerous” business.
According to a news release issued Monday by the Austin City Council, the “Mikes” theater, which opened in October, had a policy of “no drugs or alcohol.”
The theater also had a strict no-smoking policy.
A lawsuit filed by a group of students on behalf of several employees alleges the company failed to comply with a state law requiring theaters to keep a minimum of 30 percent of their seats vacant during peak demand periods.
The city said it was pursuing legal action.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
